This vase is made from a large piece of Laburnum. The shape is based on one of the glass vases we have and was chosen to try and make the most of the grain pattern. It has a 6" long by 1" diameter glass insert. It's 8.5" tall and 4.5" wide at the base and has been finished with Chestnut Finishing Oil and then buffed to give a slight sheen. #chestnutproducts #woodturning #woodenvase #woodenvases #woodenvasedecor

Finally got around to taking some photos of recent pieces. A platter made from Irish Oak with some nice burr. A Burr Oak clock and some pens and pencils made with the TM Athena kits, the woods are, from left to right, yew, oak padauk, walnut and oak. The platter and clock are finished with Chestnut Finishing Oil and the pens and pencils with Chestnut Melamine Lacquer. The clock insert is from Turners Retreat. This is a nested bowl and platter made from spalted olive ash which has some lovely ripple on one side. I finished these last week but have only just had time to take some pictures. This is the first set of nested bowls made with the Woodcut Bowl Saver that I recently bought. The wood is Mahogany supplied by TaylorsMirfield and they are finished with Chestnut Products Lemon Oil. I'm really pleased with the way that the grain pattern runs through the two bowls. The large bowl is 8.75" diameter and 3" deep, the small bowl is 6" diameter and 1.75" deep. This blank was earmarked for my next basket illusion bowl, unfortunately it had a number of inclusions in it which would not have taken a bead, so it ended up as a platter with a coloured rim. It's Jo Sonja's iridescent paint on top of Chestnut Ebonising Lacquer, then finished with Chestnut Acrylic Gloss Lacquer. The outside is Hampshire Sheen High Gloss wax. My latest basket illusion bowl, I think I need a bigger photo light box. This one is 13.5 inches diameter, 1.5 inches deep and made from sycamore supplied by Turners Retreat. It's my biggest and most complex one so far and for those who are interested in the numbers..... There are 10,944 cells of which 8,424 are coloured and it took a total of 48 hours to make. I made a bowl a couple of years ago and never really liked how it came out, so as it was a chunky bowl I put it back on the lathe and returned it. It's sycamore, 8.5 inches diameter and 2.5 inches deep. The outside is coloured with Chestnut Spirit Stains, then Chestnut Acrylic Gloss Lacquer which has been polished with a fine abrasive past and the Chestnut Burnishing Cream. I've included a photo while it was still on the lathe just after I'd finished the polishing which shows the mirror finish really well. After a couple of false starts this is my latest basket illusion bowl. I've used this basic pattern before, which is inspired by Native American designs, but I've tried out some different colour combinations on this one. It's made from Hard Maple and is 247 mm diameter and 45 mm deep. There are 5,184 cells on this piece of which 3,360 have been coloured. As usual it's been finished with Chestnut aerosol Cellulose Sanding Sealer and Acrylic Satin Lacquer. This is the last of my Colours of Autumn hollow forms for this year. It's taken a while to get this one finished for various reasons and then I wasn't happy with the polish finish on the lacquer, but having got that sorted it's now hard to photograph because of the reflections 😂When I started this piece there was lots of reds in our garden, hence the colour. We're in the middle of having a new kitchen fitted so I made this pen from an offcut of the minerva® worktop that's going in. I used a carbide tool to turn it and sanded to 12,000 grit with no need to apply any finish to it. #pens #woodturning #handmade

This is a large hollow form made from a piece of apple that had a large crack in it along with some burr features, too good to waste. the cracks and gaps in the burr are filled with Hampshire Sheen coper metal powder, it's then finished with Chestnut Acrylic Gloss Lacquer. This a crotch bowl made from the piece of wood I picked up in the raffle at my local woodturning club last Thursday. No one was quite sure what the wood was but having turned it I'd say it's Ash. There is some lovely chatoyance in several places on the piece which is difficult to capture in a photo. It's finished with HS Danish Oil. On 12th June I'll be doing my first craft fare since before Covid at the Oakwell Hall Classic Car Rally and Craft Fare. I finally got some turning done in my workshop yesterday for the first time in a couple of weeks. I made this simple goblet as an example piece for the first of a series of Beginners Woodturning Courses my local woodturning club are running for members. The wood is walnut and was really nice to turn, big long streamers coming off. This vase is a practice piece for the demo I'll be giving to the WI in Holmfirth on the 10th May. I only have a one hour slot for the demo so I needed something simple that I can complete in the time. This piece is made from cypress but I have a piece of silver birch that I'll use for the demo. The vase is 10" tall, 4 1/2" diameter at the widest point and has a removable 6" long by 1" diameter glass insert. This is my latest basket illusion bowl that I finished last week. I think that the following info answers most of the questions that I usually get asked. It's made from a sycamore bowl blank from Stiles and Bates and is just under 12 inches in diameter and 2 1/2 inches deep. There are 40 beads of which 37 are used in the design and there are 120 radial lines giving a total of 8,880 cells of which 5,790 have been coloured. The piece has been finished with a coat of Chestnut spray cellulose sanding sealer followed by two coats of Chestnut spray acrylic satin lacquer. Two clocks I finished last week. One is from a lignum vitae bowling ball with a Beech base coloured black and the second is made from oak. I've been working on this piece on and off for about three weeks and it's now finished. The design is inspired by Native American basket weave designs. It's just under 8 inches in diameter, is made from American Hard Maple and there are 4,500 cells on this piece. Finished with Chestnut Acrylic Satin Lacquer. It took about 17 hours to complete with another 4 hours developing the design. I'd say that this is the first of these pieces that I've done were the quality is such that I'd be happy to sell the piece, although with that many hours put into making it it would be quite expensive so I don't think there would be many buyers. #chestnutproducts #basketillusion #basketillusionbowl #basketweaveillusion

My eldest daughter asked me to make an identical pair of off-centre candlesticks for her, coloured with Chestnut Red Spirit Stain. I think that I would class these as "very similar", if you stand them a couple of foot apart you don't notice the slight differences. Coloured Hollow From

This is one of my coloured hollow forms. It's made from Silver Birch wood with a Rowan wood top. The wood has been turned and hollowed out to leave a wall thickness of approximately 5 mm, it has then been coloured to highlight the grain patterns in the wood. The piece has then been finished with a gloss lacquer that has been polished to a mirror finish resulting in this stunning coloured piece. It is 190 mm tall and 110 mm in diameter.
